With this option, it also doesn’t matter how difficult your case is as it is a powerful treatment method that can correct multiple dental issues.

Invisalign – One of the main conveniences of Invisalign vs braces is the low impact it has on your eating and lifestyle. The plastic aligners can be removed at any time of the day to eat, brush and floss, which lends itself to better oral hygiene for the patient as they can clean their teeth easily compared to fixed braces.

Braces – On average, fixed braces treatments take around 18 to 24 months. However, this depends on the severity of the misalignment and the age of the patient (adults will usually need them slightly longer than children and teens).

Invisalign – The average Invisalign treatment lasts around 10 to 18 months and must be worn for roughly 21 hours per day. This all depends on the individual, so timeframes may be longer or shorter. Many may think that this treatment option is faster than traditional braces, but this isn’t always the case. It may be quicker as the patient doesn’t need to wait for an orthodontic appointment to have their wires changed, however the process is still gradual and an attempt to speed it up can cause damage to the roots and irritate the gums.

Ultimately, both options are going to straighten your teeth, so results between the two will be similar.

However, Invisalign may not be suitable for patients with severe bite issues, multiple missing teeth and unsuitable gum conditions. Those wishing to change their facial profile would also not be able to use Invisalign, and if all your teeth are not fully erupted yet, this option isn’t best for you.

This option also allows for better oral hygiene as you are able to clean your teeth properly every day. You also needn’t skip any foods you love – you remove the aligners while eating so anything is on the cards. Invisalign is also more comfortable than braces as they are fitted to your jaw, so they are less likely to cut and scratch your cheeks and gums.

Cons of Invisalign – Due to the fact they’re removable, compliance is key with Invisalign. You need to wear them for most of the day for the treatment to proceed. Some of the attachments that must be used with Invisalign may be seen as a disadvantage, but these are still smaller and less noticeable than traditional braces.

The way of straightening your teeth has significantly changed since I was a teenager. In fact, a lot of things have. I remember seeing my schoolmates with those thick metal train tracks and wishing I could get them too (though we couldn't afford to at the time). Fast forward many years later and not only have I had Invisalign clear aligners for two years but also upper and lower porcelain veneers. 

Straightening your teeth using Invisalign or clear aligners is a quick, easy, effective and discrete process if you’re suitable for treatment. Though a lot of information is gone over during your appointment, a topic that is easily brushed over is how to keep your aligners clean. It is so important to keep your Invisalign or clear aligners clean during your treatment to get the best outcomes and maintain proper oral hygiene. 

After taking them out, rinse them in warm water to get rid of any saliva or food particles. This little procedure keeps your aligners clean and helps avoid the growth of bacteria. I liked to also dry my aligners before putting them back in the case as I found this minimized the odours. 

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to gently brush your aligners. Plaque and germs that may gather on the aligner surface are helped by doing this. Hot water and abrasive toothpaste should not be used since they could harm the aligners. I liked to give them a little brush every couple of days to keep them feeling and looking fresh. 

Soaking your aligners can help to efficiently remove bacteria and odours. Use a denture cleanser, Invisalign cleaning crystals, or a cleaning solution made especially for clear aligners. As directed by the manufacturer, soak your aligners for the required amount of time and not any longer. Soaking for too long can weaken the aligners.

It is important to take off your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water in order to avoid discoloration and reduce bacterial development. By doing this, there is less chance that food particles will become trapped, leading to poor breath or tooth rot. This also applies to lollies or lozenges.

It's important to always practice proper oral hygiene; with or without your aligners. Before re-applying your aligners, try to ensure that your teeth and mouth are clean. We do not recommend brushing more than twice daily but gargle water and swirl it around your mouth to remove any excess food. Brushing your teeth too much can wear out your enamel leading to issues in the future. Sometimes I liked to carry Piksters to remove any trapped food before I put my aligners back in. 

When you're not wearing your aligners, place them in the case you’re provided with. This guarantees their cleanliness, protects them from harm or damage and helps you locate them. In order to prevent bacteria from growing on your aligners, avoid leaving them out in the open or covering them with tissue. I lost my aligners once at a restaurant and that was certainly an ordeal (waiter threw out my tissue with them in it).

Throughout your treatment, make regular appointments with your dentist. They will evaluate your progress and ensure you are tracking well, offer advice on maintaining your aligners, and respond to any queries or problems you may have.

Generally, when getting veneers, getting a few is often more expensive per tooth than getting an entire smile arch. Enquire about these costs and see what will work for you in the long run. 

Researching low to no interest payment plans will prepare you financially before you go into a clinic. This will prepare you to understand what your limits are so you can be upfront about this from the get go. Knowing your final budget may also assist you in avoiding disappointment. Look into financing options like dental loans, credit cards or ask the clinic about interest free payment plan options. Before committing, make sure to read the small print and comprehend the interest rates and repayment conditions. It is so very important to do your own research and speak to a financial advisor.

You don’t always need to have a complete smile makeover to achieve the perfect smile. Stay within your limits and spend what you can. In saying this, if you are only concerned with one or two teeth, maybe, that is the option you go for if it is suitable. You don’t want to get a quick and cheaper fix to only need it rectified somewhere else (my own story on this mistake - here). 

It is also important to determine what your saving objectives are. Put together a plan and establish what you’re saving for. Perhaps you save towards your smile makeover goals such as putting away a bit of money every week or buying 2 cups of coffee instead of 5. No matter what your plan is, it will be great to start with a few cosmetic consultations to know what figures you’re dealing with to save towards. Please note, however, that you will need to consider time as a factor. If you go in for a consultation next week for a smile makeover and have been quoted X amount, you can’t return in 10 years expecting to pay what you were initially quoted. 

Getting the smile you want doesn't have to come at a high cost. By taking the time to compare your options, look for promotions and discounts, consider financing, and practice good oral hygiene, there can be a way to achieve the smile of your dreams.
