How Invisalign Works

Meet your malocclusion.

“Malocclusion” is the technical term for misalignment or incorrect relations between teeth (your smile), or between two dental arches as the jaws close (your bite).

Malocclusion is very common. It could be caused from anything from lost teeth to childhood habits. Traditionally, malocclusion was corrected by dental braces. Invisalign is a more comfortable and convenient alternative that is just as effective.

Scan & Model

Your new smile begins with an accurate scan of your current one. Invisalign's iTero 3D Scanner captures a 3D image of your smile without the use of any physical impressions. Not only is it much more comfortable, the scanner also provides superior accuracy and precision.

Powered by the data from millions smiles, ClinCheck allows us to map out the path to your new smile, right down to the tiniest shift. The algorithm helps calculate just the right amount of force for every tooth movement.

Plus, you can preview your expected new smile. We are able to make changes accordingly to suit your facial aesthetics, as well as your desired outcome.

SmartTrack

Not all clear aligners are alike. Invisalign uses only SmartTrack material, specifically engineered for the system with your comfort in mind. Invisalign aligners are BPA-free, phthalate-free, and biocompatible. Each aligner is individually trimmed to perfectly fit your gumline. The result is an aligner that looks and feels better.

Safety

You're in good hands.

Straightening your teeth will always be a medical procedure. Improper or unmonitored treatment could result in an improper bite, or even worse, tooth loss. Safety is our first concern.

Prior to treatment, we always examine you personally. The assessment of suitability also includes your oral and periodontal health. We would never recommend treatment unless we are confident that the desired result can be safely and effectively achieved.

As your teeth straighten, it is crucial to track their movement periodically. At each review appointment, we update your teeth models so that your aligners reflect real-time progress.

While it is tempting to try to speed up the process, your bones need time to heal properly, at a speed that your body can keep up with. Each review appointment is an additional opportunity to adjust treatment to match your body.

From before to after, we support you every step of the way.

Invisalign has proven to be as effective at straightening teeth as traditional braces. The level of Invisalign experience will determine how an orthodontist or dentist decides how to treat a patient. Patients with severe crowding or bite problems may require interdisciplinary treatments in which Invisalign is used in combination with other teeth straightening techniques.

Like brackets and arch wires, the Invisalign aligner moves teeth through the appropriate placement of controlled force on the teeth. The principal difference is that Invisalign not only controls forces, but also controls the timing of the force application. With each aligner, only certain teeth are allowed to move, and these movements are determined by the orthodontic treatment plan for that particular aligner. This results in an efficient force delivery system.

There are four primary benefits of Invisalign:

  1. Invisalign is nearly invisible — you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing.

  2. Invisalign is removable – you can eat and drink what you want during treatment; you can also brush and floss normally to maintain good oral hygiene.

  3. Invisalign is comfortable — there are no metal brackets or wires to cause mouth irritation. No metal or wires also means you spend less time in the doctor’s chair getting adjustments.

  4. Invisalign allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan before you start — so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

Most patients are suitable for Invisalign. Cases that are difficult or unsuitable for Invisalign may include:

  • Up-righting severely tipped teeth

  • Not all the permanent teeth have erupted - you're still growing!

  • Multiple missing teeth

  • Unsuitable periodontal (gum) condition

  • Patients wanting to change their facial profile

Appointment #2

Getting Started

If you are suitable for Invisalign treatment, we will take an accurate impression of your teeth via a 3D scan. Then, using Invisalign's database, we generate a simulation of your teeth and the expected movement throughout your treatment. Using this information, we create a personalised roadmap of your treatment.

Our cosmetic dentist will then make changes accordingly to suit your facial aesthetics, as well as your discussed desired outcome. Once you're ready to proceed, we then approve and manufacture the first set of your customised Invisalign aligners.

If you decide to proceed, we will collect a non-refundable deposit of $500 which will go towards your treatment at the end of this appointment.

Your aligners are custom-made just for you. Future sets are adjusted to reflect real-time progress.

Appointment 3+

Your Appointments

Your first set of custom Invisalign aligners will arrive approximately 2-4 weeks from your scan appointment. You will then wear the first two aligners for two weeks at a time before returning for another assessment with our team.

From there, we will see you every 6-8 weeks to track the movement of your teeth in these follow up and review appointments. This way, we can continue to adjust your personalised treatment to reflect real time progress.

You can eat and drink whatever you desire - just remember to remove your aligners first. The only beverage you can drink with aligners on is water. And it is important that you brush your teeth after each meal and prior to reinserting your aligners to maintain proper hygiene.

Aligners should be worn all day except when eating, brushing and flossing. We recommend for your aligners to be worn at least 22 hours a day. The more you wear it, the better your results.

The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing and rinsing them in lukewarm water. We also offer aligner cleaning crystals for purchase.

What's Next

Aftercare

After completing your Invisalign or orthodontic treatment, we will provide you with x1 set of upper and lower retainers.

Completed treatment does not guarantee perfectly straight teeth for the rest of your life. Teeth have a memory and often try to move back to their original positions. Retainers are required to keep your teeth in their new positions and regular retainer wear is necessary to preserve your new smile!

We also recommend that you maintain your oral health with regular check up and cleans every 6 months with your favourite dentist.

The length of Invisalign treatment is dependent on the severity of each individual patient’s orthodontic issues. Treatment may vary from anywhere between six months to two years with an average treatment taking around 12 to 14 months.

Aligners are made of clear, strong, and comfortable medical grade non-toxic plastic that is virtually invisible when worn. There are no metal brackets or wires to cause mouth irritation. Invisalign aligners are also BPA-free, phthalate-free, and biocompatible.

After or during the initial consultation, your treating orthodontist or dentist will need to take x-rays, photos and moulds of your teeth. These records will be sent to the USA to be used to manufacture your custom made aligners. This process will take approximately 6 weeks (from the time the records are sent to the USA to the time treatment can begin).

Invisalign alone can cost between $3000 to $8400. As with other medical treatments only your orthodontist or dentist can determine cost based on your specific needs. Factors may include your treatment goals, the difficulty of your case, how long you are in treatment, and your healthcover or payment method.

While Invisalign treatment is usually covered, it may be considered as "major dental." We highly recommend that you ask your fund directly. Invisalign treatment is claimed under number 881 - orthodontic treatment. This is for the entire treatment course.

Yes, as long as you remove your aligners first, and rinse properly before putting them back on.

No. We discourage smoking due to discoloration, and recommend that you remove your aligners before all meals and snacks.

The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing and rinsing them in lukewarm water. We also offer aligner cleaning crystals for purchase.
