Invisalign uses a clear aligner system that gradually moves teeth into the best position, with the direction of your treating dentist, offering a discreet, low maintenance path to a straighter smile. This is a newer and more modern alternative to traditional metal braces, which have an established history of success. Traditional braces have brackets that are attached to the teeth, then wires are fitted, and there are several options including clear or lingual braces (behind the teeth) to choose from.

Braces – Braces are convenient because they don’t have to be removed when eating, so they are continually working, and you don’t have to remember to put them back in. With this option, it also doesn’t matter how difficult your case is as it is a powerful treatment method that can correct multiple dental issues.

Invisalign – One of the main conveniences of Invisalign vs braces is the low impact it has on your eating and lifestyle. The plastic aligners can be removed at any time of the day to eat, brush and floss, which lends itself to better oral hygiene for the patient as they can clean their teeth easily compared to fixed braces.

Braces – On average, fixed braces treatments take around 18 to 24 months. However, this depends on the severity of the misalignment and the age of the patient (adults will usually need them slightly longer than children and teens).

Invisalign – The average Invisalign treatment lasts around 10 to 18 months and must be worn for roughly 21 hours per day. This all depends on the individual, so timeframes may be longer or shorter. Many may think that this treatment option is faster than traditional braces, but this isn’t always the case. It may be quicker as the patient doesn’t need to wait for an orthodontic appointment to have their wires changed, however the process is still gradual and an attempt to speed it up can cause damage to the roots and irritate the gums.

Ultimately, both options are going to straighten your teeth, so results between the two will be similar.

However, Invisalign may not be suitable for patients with severe bite issues, multiple missing teeth and unsuitable gum conditions. Those wishing to change their facial profile would also not be able to use Invisalign, and if all your teeth are not fully erupted yet, this option isn’t best for you.

Without an initial consultation, it’s nearly impossible to determine the full cost of your treatment. Many factors, including the complexity and the duration of your treatment, will impact and contribute to the cost.

Even clear braces are more noticeable than plastic aligners. In addition, wires and brackets can cause irritation to the cheeks. With braces, you must also take care not to break the wires, as this could delay treatment, so certain foods must be avoided. As the teeth align with braces, stiffer wires are required to straighten the teeth, so more frequent orthodontist appointments are required.

Pros of Invisalign – Heralded as ‘straighter teeth on the down low’, one of the main benefits of Invisalign is how discreet it is compared to traditional braces. This option also allows for better oral hygiene as you are able to clean your teeth properly every day. You also needn’t skip any foods you love – you remove the aligners while eating so anything is on the cards. Invisalign is also more comfortable than braces as they are fitted to your jaw, so they are less likely to cut and scratch your cheeks and gums.

Cons of Invisalign – Due to the fact they’re removable, compliance is key with Invisalign. You need to wear them for most of the day for the treatment to proceed. Some of the attachments that must be used with Invisalign may be seen as a disadvantage, but these are still smaller and less noticeable than traditional braces.

Perhaps you save towards your smile makeover goals such as putting away a bit of money every week or buying 2 cups of coffee instead of 5. No matter what your plan is, it will be great to start with a few cosmetic consultations to know what figures you’re dealing with to save towards. Please note, however, that you will need to consider time as a factor. If you go in for a consultation next week for a smile makeover and have been quoted X amount, you can’t return in 10 years expecting to pay what you were initially quoted. 

Getting the smile you want doesn't have to come at a high cost. A gummy smile is a common dental concern that we see often in our day to day operations. Sometimes this can vary from one tooth to an entire smile. The good news is that there are various available treatment options to address this. Here is a guide to some of the most popular ways to treat a gummy smile:

For people who want to correct their gummy smile using the least invasive means, muscle relaxant injections are a good starting point. With this procedure, the relaxant is injected into the muscles that elevate the top lip. The amount of gum shown when you smile is diminished by relaxing these muscles. Injections of muscle relaxants, can last for up to three to four months, and the operation itself is quick. It is a good short term solution that will require maintenance and continuous, on-going treatments. 

The excess gum tissue is removed during a cosmetic dental surgery known as gum contouring, often referred to as gum reshaping, gum lifting or gum laser surgery.  In order to have a more proportionate smile, this surgery entails cutting the gums either manually or with a laser. Traditional surgical techniques or laser therapy can both be used to complete the process. It usually takes an hour or two depending on how many teeth are involved and is done under local anesthetic.

If the condition at the root of your gummy smile requires treatment, braces or Invisalign may be required. The purpose of this procedure is to realign the jaw and realign the teeth. Depending on how severe the condition is, orthodontic treatment can last anywhere from a few months to a few years in duration. Further gum laser surgery is sometimes used in conjunction with this treatment if required.

Having gone through both Invisalign and veneers myself, I genuinely know the importance of having a retainer and would love to impart my wisdom onto others. It is a truly money-saving hack that is often overlooked. 

Now, I’m not a dentist, a hygienist or a dental nurse. I am a patient. I know retainers can be a pain in a back side. It’s not flattering to wear, it gets dirty (and smelly) quickly, and it’s a very forgettable item – especially at sleepovers, weekend getaways or even holidays. I know, we’ve all been there where it comes to bedtime, we take out our toothbrushes and look through our toiletry bag for our retainers and think oh crap, I left it at home….. oh well, life goes on. But think of it as an important item to have, like, your phone charger for example. Your phone will not function, power or be usable in any way if it doesn’t have any battery or charge, it will be rendered useless and cannot live without it. Your teeth, however, can live without your retainers but it shouldn’t, especially after you have spent thousands of dollars on treatment.

The dentist isn’t making you wear a retainer for fun, it genuinely has a purpose. I mean, if you think about it, if they wanted you to constantly fork out money, they wouldn’t make you wear one at all so your teeth could shift or chip and you’ll have to continually go back to fix it.

Still not convinced? Here are some incentives on why you should love and respect your retainers:

Protection - Wearing retainers is a great way to protect your teeth and smile from the damaging effects of minor grinding and jaw clenching. (1)

Retention - Whether you’ve had braces or not, with age and time, your teeth can possibly shift. Wearing your retainer will help prevent your teeth from moving. (2) There are many factors that can contribute to teeth shifting in life including the changing shape of your jaw as you age or continuous pressure from eating or sleeping (i.e., the constant pressure of sleeping on your face or side of your face).  

Custom-fit - Your retainer is made for you and you only. The custom fit has two benefits; a), it fits snugly to your teeth to stop them from moving and b), you can double up and use it as a whitening tray (IF you have the clear plastic retainers). (3)

Saving Money - The protection and benefits of retainer wearing will hopefully mean you won’t need additional dental work because you chipped a tooth grinding or because your teeth have shifted back after you’ve had braces! (4) And take it from me, forcing yourself to remember this habit every night will reinforce general dental hygiene as well. 

So, how often should you clean your retainer? Great question. Cleaning them habitually will ensure it’s less grimy/smelly and more comfortable to wear. However, if you clean them too much, you can actually damage them if you’re using anything abrasive. A gentle daily clean with a very soft bristled toothbrush or even just water is enough. A proper soak should be done weekly with a retainer or denture cleaner to keep it fresh and prolong its life. Using the wrong substance or product can be very damaging to your retainers, even if you’re using a bit of toothpaste. This can cause it to wear out faster and potentially break. Please check with your dentist for some recommendations or brands.

Though long lasting, your retainer won’t live forever. We advise getting it replaced as soon as you see any sign of wear and tear such as cracks or splits. It is important to do so immediately because these cracks or splits will make the retainer less effective. General plastic retainers should last you anywhere from 1-3 years if properly taken care of. Thick grinding splints can last up to five years. Always make sure you keep your retainer in a safe case when not in use (like you would for your Rolex or diamond ring, yes it's that important). This will protect your retainer from dust, bacteria and even the dog - believe me, if dogs can eat your homework, they can eat your retainers too!
