What are Root Canals For?

Under your tooth enamel (the top surface of your teeth) is a hard layer called dentin. Below the dentin is what is called dental pulp, made up of a complex network of connective tissue, nerves, and blood vessels.

Because dental pulp is responsible for growing dentin and providing nourishment and function to your teeth, the impact of inflammation or infection of pulp can be severe. Some common symptoms of dental pulp infection include the following:

  • Sensitivity to heat and cold

  • Tooth and gum pain when chewing

  • Swelling or an abscess (a swollen area with accumulation of pus)

  • Discolouration of the tooth

If the affected area is left untreated, the infection may spread to other areas — that’s why it’s best to get treatment as soon as you notice any of the above symptoms. Vogue Dental can help; at our Sydney Studio, our root canal experts can conduct a thorough examination to determine the best root canal treatment plan for your teeth.

How Does Root Canal Treatment Work?

During your root canal procedure in Sydney, we will remove the infected or dead pulp from the affected tooth and apply a medication which is designed to combat and push out the infection from the tooth. Once the infection has been flushed out, we’ll be able to preserve the original bite, alignment, and appearance of the original, natural tooth. Depending on the severity of the infection and the status after the medication has taken affect, root canal treatment takes place over several appointments and can take a few weeks to complete.

Root Canal Sydney FAQs

The most common sign that your tooth may be infected or decayed is extreme sensitivity to hot and cold sensations. You may experience tooth and gum pain when you chew, and you might also notice swelling, an abscess, or tooth discolouration.

If you notice any of these symptoms, book a consultation for root canal treatment with us in Sydney. Root canal is best done as soon as possible; if left untreated, the infection can spread to the jawbone, having more dire consequences for your mouth.

As root canal treatment is a major restorative dental procedure, it is most commonly covered by private health insurance in Sydney. However, your level of coverage will depend on your treatment plan and the cover from your insurance provider.

We can make it easy for you; after your root canal consultation at our Sydney studio, we’ll provide you with a clear and helpful itemised breakdown of your treatment plan. You can use this to check your level of coverage with your health fund.

Unfortunately, as root canal treatment is a fairly extensive procedure, it usually takes at least 2-3 appointments — over several weeks. At Vogue Dental, we provide root canal treatment in three main stages:

Stage 1: First, we will remove the dying nerve of the decayed tooth or teeth and control the infection by applying special medication into the canal.

Stage 2: We’ll need to wait a few weeks for the medication to flush out the bacteria. Depending on its success, we will either apply more medication or place a filling to seal the root canal.

Stage 3: After root canal treatment, we recommend getting a dental crown placed on the affected tooth to help you rebuild your strength and let you use that tooth normally.

While we’d like to be able to say we can conduct root canal treatments in one quick and easy procedure, the unfortunate truth is that it will take time, and we have to progress carefully to treat and save your tooth.

Sometimes, root canal patients may need to return to our clinic in Sydney for additional visits. During these visits, we’ll conduct supplementary cleans and additional application of the medication to eliminate the infection fully. If repeat visits are required, we’ll place a temporary filling on the affected tooth. At Vogue Dental, we do our best to ensure you aren’t in pain. We provide helpful advice and post-procedure care to make sure your root canal treatment goes as smoothly, safely, and quickly as possible.

From the start of your root canal treatment to the finish, there will be a few weeks where the medication we use will have to take effect. Depending on how severe the decay and infection is, it could take even longer, as secondary application of the medicine may be required. However, once treatment is over, we can help you get back to using the affected tooth normally again by applying an effective filling, as well as placing a dental crown over the tooth. Cementing a crown will ensure that your treated tooth won’t break or crack, and you can use it normally, with confidence and comfort.
